What are the components of a good diet?

In order for our body to function properly we need a balanced diet consisting of macro-nutrients i.e. carbohydrates, fats and proteins and macro nutrients i.e. vitamins and minerals

Carbohydrates are the main source of energy for your body and are derived from breaking down individual glucose, fructose or galactose units. Complex carbohydrates such as e.g. brown bread, rice and yams deliver a higher amount of energy, as they are not as quickly digested as simple carbs (e.g. white bread).

Fats are responsible for helping you manage mood swings, stay mentally and physically alert and even control your weight.  Make sure you choose good fats such as mono-unsaturated, polyunsaturated and omega-3 fats (e.g. olive oil, tofu, nuts, fish) over food items that contain trans- and saturated fats (e.g. crisps, cookies, red meat).

Proteins are broken down into individual amino acids. Your body uses the amino acids to build and repair the various parts of your body. Your body also needs protein for components of your immune system, hormones, nervous system and organs and can even turn proteins into energy if you consume too little carbohydrates. Good sources of proteins are white meat, fish, eggs, beans and soy products.

Vitamins and minerals are just as important as carbohydrates, protein and fats, even though you only need them in small amounts. They usually function as co-enzymes, which means they help some of your body's chemical reactions happen a lot faster. For example, many of the B complex vitamins help burn carbohydrates for energy, Vitamin A is needed for vision, zinc is involved in many metabolic processes, and vitamin C helps keep connective tissue strong and your immune system functioning. Vegetables and fruits are good sources of vitamins and minerals.

    The benefits of eating healthily

A healthy diet will give your body the right amount of energy, enough raw materials and all of the "little helpers" you need to stay healthy. Good nutrition will also provide phytochemicals and antioxidants that will help keep you feeling young, looking great, and help reduce the risk of illness. For more information and a tailor-made diet plan consult either a nutritionist or your Personal Trainer.
